Electrified!

Hey! Get out and go somewhere! Check into the museums or exhibits in your area. Here we have the electricity exhibit at the Ecotaruim. Places like this are great to grab year memberships to save for a rainy day, or if you want to leave the creativity to someone else and just get out of the house. Most of the time you can see some great ideas to use at home for projects, for example, the little monsters learned how to complete a circuit and power lights using play dough!

Repurposed Project?

What started as the creation of a paper mache solar system took a vicious turn into the creation of balloon and paper towel roll weapons. Now this has been one of the best project switches that have ever occurred... This stuff is legendary, the project took a hard left turn into the 1990s and landed right into an American Gladiators battleground. The conflict was fierce, many balloons were popped, and towel rolls shredded; but the kid had a sombrero on, it's clear he means business.

The Car Won't Fix Itself You Know...

Remember this little tidbit folks, most of the time kids don't care what your doing, they just want to be part of it. As frustrating as it can be to hear a thousand and one questions, or get the occasional foot in the face or drink spilled on your head; just remember, they just want to be involved with what your doing. Now I'm not saying have your kids take off on the riding lawnmower (yes it happened) or sharpen a saw blade; but if it's safe, let them be present. It's very important to them to feel like they are making a difference, even if they are making it counter productive at times. It's easier said then done, this I know, I have had my fair share of sending them away when they get out of hand so I can get a job done quick and painlessly, but when you can let them be there, just do it. It may just make their day.

The "Me" Frames

Here we have another very cheap yet fun project, all you'll need is a few scrap pieces of wood, or even cardboard, and any art supplies you have around in the house. Have your kids create a "Me" collage, putting everything they like and want to glue or nail to this thing. Remember, let them be creative, let them get crazy, be there to help with cutting or tools, but let them take the lead on this one, and don't let them hot glue your iPad to it. Have a blast!

The Mad Scientists

Here we have a couple of mad scientists up to no good again... The experiments we have done here are testing viscosity of different fluids, and creating a soap bar monster (yes a soap monster, as if children didn't have enough issues actually getting into the shower and getting clean). Our viscosity experiment is very simple and consists of vegetable oil, syrup, and water with food coloring. Independently dump these fluids (heavy to light)  into a mason jar or glass and see the separation of fluids, you can even get crazy and put objects in it and they should stay in the fluid they are placed. Now, the soap monster... Find yourself a bar if soap, and put it in the microwave and turn it on. Yes that's it. Then watch the chaos unfold, it doesn't take long for the transformation to complete, so for all of you that set it and forget it, and have a soap monster that has eaten your kitchen and a child or two.. I'm not responsible for any misuse of these experiments. As always, have fun and safety first!

Rice Art!

In our grand return we introduce a very cheap and simple art project, all you'll need is some white rice, a pack of food coloring, glue, and some paper. Lay out some paper, then spread glue where you want the rice to stick and create your work of art! This is a great activity for all ages. If the young ones happen to eat some of it, well, white rice goes well with anything, including art! enjoy!!
