Growing... Candy?

That's right, lets grow some candy! Rock candy has been around since the 18th century and for good reason. It is surprisingly simple to make and exciting for your kids; this also can double as a chemistry lesson for them! (well, lets face it, they are only interested in eating it but i tried..)

You'll need a chopstick and something to hold it across the rim of the cup (you'll see in the pictures), a jar or tall glass, about a cup of water, 3-4 cups of sugar, and food coloring (optional).

Bring the water to a boil then slowly dump the sugar in about a 1/2 cup at a time, continue doing this until the sugar stops dissolving as much. Let sit for 5 minutes. While that is sitting, take and wet the chopstick and coat most of it in sugar. Dump solution into the cup then slowly submerge the coated chopstick into the cup staying about an inch from the bottom (I used clothespins to hold it up).

Then let it sit for 5-7 days and you just grew some candy!
